Sturgeon Bay (Trip #7)

24 Photos from a trip to Sturgeon Bay on Sunday, July 12. The number of ships in the yard would make one think it is winter lay-up time. The ships that would normally be out working, but instead are at Bay Shipbuilding in some kind of lay-up (temporary or longer) include those that have not seen any action this year - Arthur M. Anderson, Philip R. Clarke, and Buffalo. Others that have seen at least some action this year include: Mesabi Miner, American Spirit, Burns Harbor, Lee A. Tregurtha, American Courage, and the cement carrying tug/barge, Samuel de Champlain/Innovation. The Samuel de Champlain is currently in the floating dry-dock undergoing repairs, and the pair should be back to work soon. The Burns Harbor arrived early this morning, and it is not known how long it will be there. The new-build barge, Petrochem Supplier is out of the graving dock and docked alongside the Lee A. Tregurtha; the tug, Corpus Christi, looks to be ready to go, and the pair (assuming that the tug will be paired with the barge, Petrochem Supplier, should be departing sometime soon. That leaves the John Sherwin, whose conversion to a self-unloader remains on hold; or, it could be that it may never happen. That all depends on the economy. It is truly sad to see all of these ships tied to the wall, especially at this time of year. And, these are not the only ones, there are many more in other Great Lakes harbors that are also idle! Our economy definitely needs help! Most of these lay-ups are directly tied to the disastrous state of our automobile manufacturers, and thus steel makers, etc. The "ripple-down" effects of the auto industry are wide-reaching!!
