As a kid in the 60s we would listen to the sounds of the ships at night signalling each other on the St. Mary's channel and the lock master with long and short blasts from the ship's horns. We knew the codes. Sadly, those sounds are uncommon these days and the number of ships has declined with the advent of the 1000' freighters. In my day, the 200'-700' freighters were more typical and at almost any given time of the day you'd spot 3 freighters on the river.
