As a kid in the 60s we would listen to the sounds of the ships at night signalling each other on the St. Mary's channel and the lock master with long and short blasts from the ship's horns. We knew the codes. Sadly, those sounds are uncommon these days and the number of ships has declined with the advent of the 1000' freighters. In my day, the 200'-700' freighters were more typical and at almost any given time of the day you'd spot 3 freighters on the river. The last time I saw the Viking was when she was in service for the Ann Arbor Railroad many years ago hauling rail cars, automobiles/trucks and passengers between Elberta (Frankfort) Michigan and Kewaunee, Wisconsin. You are probably aware that at one time she also crossed Lake Michigan to Manitowoc, Menominee and Manistique. So in a sense, she is back home in a familiar port, but it's very sad to know she will be cut down into a barge to haul wood pulp. Such a shameful end for a fine and faithful old carferry.
