A photo-editing program gave me the "shot" that I had hoped for (but never got) when both the old and new Mackinaws were in Menominee on Dec. 7. (This is a compilation of two different photos)

The (old) USCG Mackinaw was in Menominee Dec. 7. It was moored at the Menominee North Pier Lighthouse pier and was open for tours from noon until 5 p.m. today. (Shown here about a half hour before the tours begin)

Click here to tour the Old Mackinaw.

ALSO - The (new) Mackinaw was open for public tours on Dec. 7 during the same hours at the K & K Warehouse dock in Menominee. Unfortunately, it was not feasible to have both ships in the same location, as they (probably) didn't want to have to come through the Ogden Street Bridge, which closed seasonal, full-time operation a couple weeks ago. It sounds like both ships will depart Menominee on Dec. 8 (when the bridge will have to be opened for the (new) Mackinaw to depart).

Click here to tour the New Mackinaw AND for photos of her departure on Dec. 8.

Special Guest Photo Gallery - New Mackinaw Launch

Since I really messed up on getting photos of the launch, I am happy to step out of the spotlight for a little while and do something I don't usually do ... Several people have come forward with photos of the launch and were kind enough to give me permission to use them on this site. I would therefore like to say a sincere heart-felt "THANK YOU" to Mr. & Mrs. Jon (Kathy) Cappel of Arkdale, WI, Mr. Bob Page of Gladstone, MI, and Mr. Scott Best of Menominee, MI for the following presentation:

Photos by Mr. & Mrs. Jon (Kathy) Cappel:

(Bow views) - On the ways just prior to launch
Over she goes
...And SPLASH!
Further over on her side

Righting herself
...And rocking back the other way
...And the other way again
Just about through rolling

(Stern views) - Splashdown!
Almost disappearing behind a wall of water
Righting herself as a wave surges across the river
Rolling a bit as the wave continues

Menominee North Pier Lighthouse - Ice shoves are piling up on April 6
Pere Marquette 41 - Marinette's first commercial visitor of 2005, Pere Marquette 41, entered the Menominee River harbor about 2 p.m. (CDT) on April 8 with a load of pig iron for Marinette Fuel & Dock.
Pere Marquette 41 - Close-up of the tug Undaunted, which pushes the Pere Marquette 41 barge
Pere Marquette 41 - At Marinette Fuel & Dock a backhoe dumps a load of pig iron into a hopper
Pere Marquette 41 - Close-up of the backhoe dumping pig iron into the hopper

Pere Marquette 41 - A front-end loader also drops pig iron into the hopper while a crewmember waters down the pig iron (probably to keep the dust down)
Pere Marquette 41 - The hopper feeds a moveable conveyor (aboard the barge) which is used to transfer the pig iron to the dock
Pere Marquette 41 - That's a Bobcat pushing pig iron around in back of the water sprinkler. It will come into play more as the barge empties, pushing the little remaining loose pig iron into a pile so the backhoe's bucket can handle it more efficiently.
Pere Marquette 41 - stern view of the action
Calypso - The Calypso became Marinette's first foreign visitor when it arrived on April 16 with a load of Brazilian pig iron destined for Marinette Fuel & Dock. This ship last visited Marinette in 2003 under the name "Adimon".

Calypso - Passing Menominee North Pier Lighthouse

U. S. A. C. E. - Tug "Kenosha" docked in the Menominee River after dredging was completed for the day
U. S. Navy Vessel - This vessel entered the Menominee River on the afternoon of April 28 and proceeded to dock at Marinette Marine
U. S. Navy Vessel - Stern view of this vessel. As I understand it - This is apparently an updated version of the old navy landing craft. There are several differently configured "modular" vessels that can be grouped together in various configurations and operated as an "integrated" vessel as needed for a specific operation. This (and similar) vessel was built at Marinette Marine. Anyone with more knowledge of these vessels, please e-mail me or drop a line in the Guestbook on this site. Thank you.

Vechtborg - Dockside view ... the Vechtborg was actually expected to be here yesterday as it was 3-4 hours ahead of the Virginiaborg when they passed through the Welland Canal last Friday; it is not known where the Vechtborg was as it "disappeared" for 24 hours. Notice the new USCG Mackinaw (2) at Marinette Marine in the background
Algoway - Heading past the Menominee North Pier Lighthouse with a load of salt for Marinette Fuel & Dock on May 9

Vechtborg - Still unloading Tuesday afternoon (May 10)
Vechtborg - Close-up as a crane lifts a bale of pulp from the holds of the Vechtborg

U.S. Navy Maneuvers - Marinette Marine had three of their new "modular" craft out on a fairly rough bay of Green Bay on May 11. These units are built with different configurations and are made so they can be hooked together to run as an integrated unit. Here you can see three of them (each with a different configuration) hooked end to end battering their way through some choppy waters.
Algorail - Arrived early in the morning of May 12 with a load of salt for Marinette Fuel & Dock
Algorail - Swinging in the boom prior to departure
Algorail - Sporting the U.S., Seaway and Algoma "house flag" along with the stylish "A over C" (Algoma Central) logo

Fishermen ... What Are You Thinking?!!

As the Vlieborg prepared to leave Menominee on May 22, a couple fishermen in a small boat appeared to not be paying attention to what was going on around them. Check out the actions of the small boat alongside the ship:

Vlieborg - The ship begins its turn by kicking its stern away from the dock; but the fishermen in the small boat alongside (a little to the right of the "G" in "Wagenborg") seem unaware of what is going on
Vlieborg - After a little shouting was heard, the fishermen woke up and finally realized that the ship was moving
Vlieborg - ...then they turned away
Vlieborg - ...and just in time

I have seen this scenario (fishing boats waiting until the last minute to get out of the way of a moving ship) played out several times in the five years that I have been a marine photographer. Fortunately for all involved, everything turned out alright... this time!

Vlieborg - Now that the fishermen are safe, the ship continues its turn

Cedarglen - arrived at Marinette Fuel & Dock on July 3 with a load of approx. 20,000 tons of pig iron from Quebec. I believe this is the first time a Canada Steamship Lines ship has serviced our port.
Cedarglen - Bow-on view alongside the craneship William H. Donner - the Cedarglen is not really new to our area, as she delivered pig iron here in the 1990's under her former name, "Cartierdoc" for N. M. Paterson & Sons

Catherine Desgagnes - Delivered another load of pig iron to Marinette Fuel & Dock on July 12 - notice how deep she is loaded (and, she had been unloading for several hours before this photo was taken)!
Navy Landing Craft/Barges - This group of Navy craft is about ready to be towed to Chicago from Marinette Marine

Ogden Street Bridge - While towing the Navy Barges (previous photo) down the Menominee River early on the evening of July 13, the tugs apparently lost (at least partial) control of the tow and the barges smacked into the wood pilings that protect the bridge knocking one of them up against the bridge. The bridge itself fortunately was not damaged severely enough to force its closure, which would have been a major problem with the Interstate Bridge already out of commission as it is being rebuilt.

Replacement of damaged pilings at Ogden Street Bridge

On August 8 work began on replacing the pilings that were damaged on July 13. A tug and two barges, one with a crane equipped with a pile driver, will handle the job.

Crew Changes On The (new) Mackinaw

Mid-afternoon on Sept. 13 the Mackinaw (II) appeared to be heading back into the Menominee River; however, she stopped outside the buoys as three smaller boats approached. It appears as if a crew transfer took place, as the two smaller boats soon headed back into port loaded with life-jacket-wearing men.
