An Interesting Afternoon At KK Integrated Logistics On Oct. 1

The tug, Donald C, arrived with two empty barges at KK Integrated Logistics around 3:30 a.m. today. 12 hours later, one barge was loaded, and the second had "a good heap" on it. The BBC Rio Grande is still in port. Just as the BBC Mississippi did last week, the BBC Rio Grande is on its final visit here, and is reconfiguring the holds of the ship as they prepare to head back to their ocean trade routes. This marks the 24th load of wind turbine towers for 2010 - there are 42 tower sections (or, 14 complete towers) per ship; so there were 1008 sections, or 336 complete wind turbine towers delivered here this year. That means there will have been 1008 trucks carrying these tower sections by the end of the year; if you live up here, you have more than likely run into some of this truck traffic (they are hard to miss).

While I was at KK, several trucks arrived carrying the large rocks for a Lake Michigan project. I have photos of the two different types of trucks that carry these loads, plus the unloading process. A "hopper-type" dump truck carries rocks ranging up to 3 or 4 tons each; while flat bed trucks deliver rocks weighing up to 20 - 25 tons each! The flatbeds carry either 2 or 3 rocks each, depending on the weight. One of the hopper trucks I saw earlier this year was carrying 11 rocks.

One last thing that was going on at KK today was 3 railroad gondola cars were loaded with pig iron, and were sitting on a rail siding in the yard waiting to be picked up.
