Choose the "slideshow" feature at the top of the page and set the delay for 1 or 2 seconds, then set the max. size to 800 x 800 (both items at top of page). I took a series of photos in sequence of the launch, and Boatnerd's slideshow feature is really cool! - WARNING - Clicking on this link will take you away from this site. USS Freedom - Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) Built at Marinette Marine

LCS - Marinette Marine began "walking out" their new LCS, USS Freedom, to the launch area on a rainy Sept. 8. In this photo it is about half-way to the launch area from the building where it was constructed. The launch is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 23.

LCS - Thursday Sept. 21 on the ways ready for launch this Saturday
LCS - All decorated (on Friday afternoon) for tomorrow's launch

The Menominee side of the Menominee River was jammed with onlookers waiting to see the launch of the LCS on Sept. 23. A friend of mine and I were going to go to view the launch, but he called shortly after 10 a.m. and said the viewing areas were already crowded (the launch ceremonies were not scheduled to begin until 11 a.m. - the ship hit the water around 11:40 a.m.). After talking it over, we decided not to go. I did take a ride around about 11 a.m. and there wasn't an open spot to be found except on the US-41 Interstate Bridge, which would have been a possibility for taking photos EXCEPT for a haze and having to shoot directly into the sun! So, I am sorry I didn't get photos of the launch itself for you. I did, however, get some interesting photos of the ship being turned around in the Menominee River turning basin down-river from Marinette Marine later that afternoon. I hope you enjoy those photos.

Varnebank - Outbound past the lighthouse and on its way to Duluth for a load of grain ... The last ship of the season for KK (and probably for Menominee & Marinette) came with our first accumulation of snow for winter 2006/2007.

Pig Iron Piles - These are just some of the piles of pig iron on the dock at Marinette Fuel & Dock on Dec. 2. The pile to the left (with the black tarp over it) is salt.
Algomarine - Arrived Marinette Fuel & Dock on Dec. 10 with a load of salt (I guess the Varnebank wasn't the last ship this year) :O)
Algomarine - Bow view from the lighthouse pier ... That unofficially makes 45 total vessel-trips into Menominee/Marinette this season by 20 different vessels (not including the USCG Mackinaw coming back to Marinette Marine early in the year for a check-up). Happy Holidays Everyone! See you when our shipping season begins next year.

Alvin Clark(?) Anchors at Menominee Marina ... NOT!!

The mystery of where these items came from has finally come to light! "They originally were on the sunken schooner "Jenny Belle" which is now located just southwest of Chambers Island. H. Derusha had them brought to the surface along with the masts back in the late 60's...to be placed on his new home that was modeled after the "Alvin Clark". When this home was torn down several years ago, the new owners let the "Lighthouse Restaurant" in Cedar River display the anchors and windlass...then I believe they donated them to the City of Menominee. The masts I believe are somewhere along the Menominee River, or could've been destroyed?"

I want to thank commercial fisherman, Bob Ruleau, for clearing up this mystery!!!

Windlass & Anchors - These items are are on display at the north end of the Menominee Memorial Marina. Hopefully someone will place a plaque to inform visitors what their significance is.
Windlass - Used to haul in the anchors on the old sailing ships
Anchor #1 - The larger of the two anchors - notice the wooden crosspiece
Anchor #2 - Smaller anchor also bearing a wooden crosspiece
Anchors - Both anchors (showing the difference in size)

Video of the raising of the "Mystery Ship" - Alvin Clark

A reader sent me this link to a video found on the Great Lakes Maritime Institute (GLMI) website of the raising of the old ship from the waters of Green Bay. The wreck was discovered about midway between Menominee, MI and Chambers Island in the bay of Green Bay. The efforts began in 1968, when local diver Frank Hoffman was hired by a local commercial fisherman to free his nets from an underwater obstruction. Click Here to see the video (about 30 minutes long). Thanks to Mark Olsen for sending this interesting link!!
