Vancouverborg - Arrived in the bay of Green Bay off Menominee on May 31 with a load of wood pulp for KK Integrated Logistics; however, with the low water levels, it was not able to enter the Menominee River and anchored about a mile offshore. It would appear that, unless the river raises overnight, they will need to bring a barge out to the ship and offload part of its cargo ("lighter") out in the bay. This was last done in Dec. 2004 when the Varnebank needed to be "lightered" out in the bay before entering port.
Vancouverborg - After laying at anchor in the bay last night, they lightered it early today (June 1) but had to wait until early afternoon to make it into the river and to its dock because of heavy fog
Vancouverborg - Secure at the KK Integrated Logistics East Dock and ready to begin unloading
Vancouverborg - Stern view from down-river
Vancouverborg - Each shoreside crane grabs a bale of pulp from the holds of the ship
Vancouverborg - When the ship departed on June 2 they needed a tug to assist in turning it around in the Menominee River turning basin. The ship is equipped with a bow thruster, which must have been out of commission or they wouldn't have needed the tug.

Dongeborg - Finally on the move on Nov. 29 - moved up to anchorage about 1-2 miles off Menominee
Dongeborg - Another view - the water level is too low for the ship to enter port, so a barge will need to be brought out to the ship so that enough wood pulp can be removed to raise the ship enough to make port
Dongeborg - KK Integrated Logistics' ex-railroad carfloat, Manitowoc, was towed out to the ship's position early Friday morning (Nov. 30)
Dongeborg - The Selvick tugs, Jimmy L and William C. Selvick, are on hand as a bale of wood pulp is lifted from the holds of the ship

On Sunday Dec. 13, the Vlistborg was partially loaded. Mid-afternoon saw the ship "battened down" as they prepared to leave port to run out of the river to drop the ballast water they had aboard when they arrived yesterday morning. This is a routine move. With the heavy weather the ship experienced last week, water was loaded into their ballast tanks before heading up here from Chicago. Ballast water, like cargo, makes the ship ride lower in the water, which makes the ship sit lower in the water making it easier to handle in rough water. Then, when a ship enters port, they can only take on a partial load because of the weight of the water in the ballast tanks. Due to ballast water rules, the ship can only empty its ballast tanks in deep water; so, the ship will proceed out into (I believe) Lake Michigan to do this before re-entering port late tomorrow. However, the move took on a different twist when they decided to tie up alongside the craneship, William H. Donner, for the night. They will then head out to empty their ballast tanks tomorrow morning. Once that is done, they will head back in to complete their load.

Dintelborg - Approaching the Ogden Street (Menekaunee) Bridge (ballast water is added to settle the ship lower in the water for more maneuverability and stability; it cannot be totally discharged if the ship is not carrying a cargo. Thus, the ship came into port, partially loaded a cargo of pulp, and now they can go out and dump the ballast tanks without affecting the stability of the ship)

Adriaticborg Arrives At KK Integrated Logistics On August 20 With A Load of Windmill Blades

The nearly-new ship was built by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Co. of Shanghai. It was launched on Dec. 3, 2010 and was delivered to Royal Wagenborg Shipping on March 8, 2011. The vessel is 469.16 feet long by 70.538 wide, measures 137.795 feet from the waterline to its highest point (airdraft), weighs in at 17,323 DWT (Dead Weight Tons - how much total weight (cargo, fuel, provisions, fresh water, ballast water, passengers and crew, etc. it can safely carry), is classed as a 1A ice-class multi-purpose ship, and carries three 60-ton cranes.

Adriaticborg - The ship arrived off Menominee on Saturday afternoon. At first, it looked as if the ship would turn around to enter port stern first with tug assistance
Adriaticborg - Wide view of the tug, Jimmy L and the ship outside the lighthouse
Adriaticborg - The ship then continued to turn ...

Adriaticborg - The ship departed KK Integrated Logistics around 7 p.m. Aug. 23 with a storm brewing and a west wind, which pushed against the ship's high sides, making for a bit of a tricky line-up for the Ogden Street (Menekaunee) Bridge
Adriaticborg - The tug, Jimmy L, leads the ship stern-first past the Viking I as they head for the bridge
Adriaticborg - The channel does not run straight through the draw bridge, so some jockeying is needed; something this tug has handled before!
Adriaticborg - The tug, which had led the ship toward the Marinette side of the river, begins to line them up for the bridge
Adriaticborg - The proper position has been attained, and the tow heads for the draw bridge
Adriaticborg - The tug leads the ship into the opening of the draw bridge as the wind continues to push against the ship's (far) side

Adriaticborg - Lookouts aboard the ship keep a careful watch on the ship's path through the bridge

Adriaticborg Finally Arrives At KK Integrated Logistics On Sept. 6

After arriving in the bay off Menominee with a load of wind turbine tower sections for KK Integrated Logistics on Sunday (Sept. 4), the ship was forced to go to anchor due to high winds. On Labor Day morning, they attempted to enter port with the assistance of the tug, Jimmy L, but were stopped in the inner harbor by the wind; so, they went back out to anchor out in the bay for the rest of the day. Finally, on Tuesday morning they were successful in heading into port stern-first this time (they had come in bow-first on their last trip in here) with the Selvick tug, Jimmy L, leading the way.

Moezelborg In Menominee On Oct. 10 & 11

The ship arrived in Menominee on Oct. 9 to load pulp at KK Integrated Logistics. They departed later that day to go out into the bay of Green Bay to dump their ballast water, as the Wagenborg ships usually do on these trips. I arrived back in Menominee on Oct. 10 after spending the previous 6 days up at the Soo Locks (Sault Ste. Marie, MI) and caught a quick photo of the ship late in the afternoon; then, I went back down on Tuesday Oct. 11 and took some photos of them loading in the morning and departing later that day.

Departing turned out to be a bit of an adventure for the ship. When they tried to move away for the dock, they found themselves stuck fast in the mud on the river bottom at the dock. After trying several times to get the ship to budge, they gave up and called for the tug. The Selvick tugs, Jimmy L and Jacqueline Nicole, were both at the KK Integrated Logistics dock; the only problem was that the crews were in Sturgeon Bay, WI (close to a 2 hour drive). The tug crew of the Jimmy L arrived before 6 p.m. and began warming up the tug's engines (it takes 30 - 45 minutes). Meanwhile, the ship decided to try again to "wiggle" its way away from the dock. First they got the bow off the dock using the bow-thrusters. Next, they were able to get the stern away from the dock just a bit. They then continued to move the bow out and stern in, then the stern out and they were free! The ship thanked the guys on the tug and were able to depart under their own power, passing through the Ogden Street (Menekaunee) Bridge around 6:30 p.m.

Metsaborg - Broadside view - notice that all of the hatch covers are in place aboard the ship - when loading pulp, moisture in the holds of the ship must be kept to a bare minimum; preferably there will be no moisture. Once the rain lets up, loading can begin again.
